A violent action-comedy
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Big 4 is a gory action-obsessed comedy and across its 2 hour 21 run-time, there’s lots to like. The story wastes no time getting right to the heart of the action. While investigating her father Petrus’s death, Police Officer Dina discovers his true identity as the head and honorary father of a gang of assassins. After locating the four thugs her father trained; Alpha, Jenggo, Pelor, and their leader, Topan, Dina and the Big 4 become targeted by a psychopath called Antonio. When Antonio kidnaps the weakest member of the group, Dina and the rest of the group must work together to save him. The first scene quickly lays out a heroic tone. A child is placed in the care of what appears to be an orphanage, but it turns out to be an organ farm. The assassin team is blowing heads off left and right and that violent theme is maintained for the rest of the movie. There are a lot of frequent, fast-paced action scenes and a few long ones too, which are all generally well-choreographed. Adding more weight to the movie, The Big 4 has a great cast and each actor fully becomes their character. The film is absolutely action-packed too and there is never a dull moment. The funny conversations between the main characters hold the movie together and make it an entertaining experience throughout. These little touches add some much-needed levity and the jokes used are genuinely hilarious. The Big 4 has a gripping storyline and really leans into its gore and violence. There is also a good bit of innuendo used to carry the dialogue toward the end. Although it would have been nice to see more vigilante action, the movie did end with a sequel teaser. It may not be the last we see of our characters; there is hope for more Big 4 escapades. Overall, this is a well-made film that any action-hungry movie watcher will enjoy.
