Hunter X Hunter

Similarities – Action & Adventure

Despite both being remakes of older shōnen anime, Hunter x Hunter shares many aspects with JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. With its well-rounded characters, incredible dialogue, unforgettable story arcs, and raw adventurous emotions, there’s lots to explore with Hunter x Hunter. Unlike JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Hunter x Hunter doesn’t feature the same “family line” structure and follows multiple child-like protagonists. Each of these protagonists has different goals and arcs dedicated to developing them further. Other than that, fans can expect Hunter x Hunter to deliver the same amount of action, thrills, and chills. Hunter x Hunter follows Gon Freecss, a boy who wants to leave his home of Whale Island in search of his father. He also wants to pursue similar dreams as his father. This is to become a professional hunter in his world. To do so, Gon will need to defeat many powerful opponents, each challenging him mentally and physically.

Fist of the North Star

Similarities – Manliness & Brutality

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure owes a lot to Fist of the North Star. Both series feature overtly buff characters, gruesome action and bloody scenes, and unique approaches to martial arts as a whole. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Jonathan Joestar and Fist of the North Star’s Kenshiro share similar characteristics and facial features, that many would feel the former is a direct continuation of the latter. Granted, Fist of the North Star’s animation isn’t as dashing or sharp as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure since it’s an older anime, but it delivers the same over-the-top violence one would expect from the latter. Furthermore, the soundtrack in Fist of the North Star is top-notch and will keep you engaged and excited. Just like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Dio Brando, Fist of the North Star offers many well-rounded and developed antagonists that are sure to make your blood boil. Fist of the North Star follows the courageous warrior Kenshiro, who embarks on a quest to find his rival, Shin. Shin had kidnapped Kenshiro’s fiancee Yuri. During his journey, Kenshiro will encounter many thugs and brutes seeking to harm innocent citizens. To combat them, Kenshiro utilizes his deadly fighting style called Hokuto Shinken. With each passing day, Kenshiro builds up a reputation for himself–both the good and the bad. He’ll soon discover that he’ll be in for a world of hurt.

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor

Similarities – Over-The-Top Animation & Sound Effects

This anime follows Kaiji Itou. He’s an apathetic individual with a lot of debt over his shoulders thanks to his lazy co-worker. To clear the debt, Kaiji receives an offer to attend a gambling event being held on the illustrious Espoir cruise ship. This event promises to clear everyone’s debt if they choose to spend one night on the ship. As you’d expect, things don’t turn out well for Kaiji. He learns that if he loses this gambling event, he’ll end up becoming someone’s indebted servant for life. To prevent this from happening, Kaiji needs to play his cards wisely and be careful of whom he trusts on the ship. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor gives off the same manly energy as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Despite revolving itself around gambling, Kaiju will be placed in situations where he needs to utilize his wit and brawn. Therefore, fans can expect the same over-the-top action scenes from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to crop up in Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. Both anime are also loyal adaptations of older works. The animation in both series is top-notch and will ensure viewers will be left entertained. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor utilizes sound effects to exaggerate many of its characters’ facial and bodily reactions to things. If you’re looking for another series that delves into the strategic side of battles more, Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor’s a must-watch!

Attack On Titan

Similarities – Violence & Gore

Attack On Titan and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are anime rooted in violence and gore. Both anime feature complex characters with enticing backstories to keep fans guessing. Attack On Titan offers fluid fight scenes and has a unique way of handling camera angles as opposed to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. The soundtrack is also top-notch and worth a listen in one’s spare time. Attack On Titan takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humans live in isolated societies. These isolated areas harbor giant walls that prevent wildlife from the outside from entering. The reason why these societies remain isolated from the rest of the world is to prevent the Titans from infiltrating into said establishments and killing citizens. At the center of it all is a boy named Eren Jaeger, his stepsister Mikasa Ackerman, and his friend Armin Artlert. One day, a large and tall Titan opens a hole in the wall and lets in a barrage of Titans. These Titans don’t delay and begin devouring everyone in their wake. After the carnage is done, Eren witnesses the destruction that fell upon his home. He vows to one day exterminate the Titans and joins the Survey Corps, who’ll help him complete said goal. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Similarities – Setting & Characters

Looking for another anime that’ll give you an adventure as bizarre as JoJo’s, than look no further than Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. This anime features an emotionally-driven storyline and is jam-packed with hard-hitting action scenes. It also has a unique art style and characters whose manliness is on par with Jonathan and Dio’s characters. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann tells the story of two friends named Simon and Kamina. These two have lived underground since they were born and had never experienced life on the surface. One day, Simon finds a strange mech named Lagann and rushes to tell Kamina. After Kamina finds out, the two use the mecha to head for the surface world. Once they arrive, they learn that it’s being run by an evil tyrant named Lord Genome. Aiming to overthrow Genome and stop his henchmen, Kamina and Simon travel alongside a rebel named Yoko Littner to put a stop to the overlord’s plan. While everything sounds dandy to them all, they’ll be met with many tragedies and cruelties, that’ll put their optimistic mindsets to the test.

Baki

Similarities – Muscular Men & Brutal Fights

Baki is another action-packed anime that features muscular men, dark themes, insane violence, and great animation. Like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Baki’s fights include strategy and brutal beatdowns that are often shown at unexpected intervals. These anime provide an interesting take on martial arts as not all characters fight with the same style in mind. Baki’s characters aren’t as over-the-top regarding personality and prowess, though. The story elements inserted into this anime aren’t as unique as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure either. However, the anime does dish out some comedic bits that should get a good laugh out of most fans. Baki tells the tale of a man named Baki Hanma. He had just won a tournament and plans to continue fighting until he can defeat his father, Yuujirou. Unfortunately, his plans are put on hold when the a tournament showrunner named Tokugawa Mistunari visits him at his school. He tells Baki that five highly-skilled death row martial artists have escaped imprisonment. He alarms him that they are coming to Tokyo to harm both Baki and others that stand in their way. Therefore Baki focuses on the all-out war between his home country’s skilled martial artists and the fighters from the heinous underground world.

Hellsing Ultimate

Similarities – Supernatural Characters & Bloodshed

Hellsing Ultimate is a bloody and action-packed anime featuring vampires. It offers a well-written storyline, incredibly designed and developed characters, and a supernatural world worth exploring. It’s main character, Alucard, feels like a mix between JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Dio Brando and Jonathan Joestar (to some degree). Alucard can be as ruthless as Dio, but as humble as Jonathan. He also forges a companionship with other warriors of his craft like Jonathan. Yet, his powers and love for violence echo that of Dio’s fuelled hatred for the Joestar family bloodline. The anime also offers top-notch animation. Despite its darker aesthetic, the anime offers some ounce of comedy. The story follows the vampire Alucard, who works for the well-acclaimed organization called Hellsing. During one of his missions, he finds a dying police officer named Seras Victoria. He offers her a chance at life again but for a price. She must become a vampire and fight alongside him and the Hellsing Organization. Seras accepts the offer, and the anime follows these two vampires as they aim to take down anyone who poses a threat to Hellsing.

Demon Slayer

Similarities – Shonen Tropes

Demon Slayer and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure rose to popularity during the last decade. Both anime are widely acclaimed titles, but fame isn’t the only aspect that binds them together. Demon Slayer utilizes common shonen tropes as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures does regarding characters calling out their attacks and having a unique power system. Likewise, Demon Slayer’s demons give off the same supernatural energy. Each of these villains has intriguing backgrounds and reasons behind their villainy. The animation is a bit better in Demon Slayer, though. The fight scenes feel like a spectacle throughout Demon Slayer’s entirety. Besides that, it promises to deliver the same joyous and heart-wrenching moments as JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure. Demon Slayer follows the tale of Tanjiro, a boy who leaves his home one day to attend something important. When he returns, he discovers that everyone in his family had been slaughtered by demons. Everyone except for his sister Nezuko. Unfortunately, Nezuko isn’t who she used to be, as she’s now a demon girl. Filled with anger and bloodlust, Tanjiro enlists in the Demon Slayer Corps. He vows to make every demon pay for what they did to his family.

Code Geass

Similarities – Characters & Mind Games

Code Geass is an incredible sci-fi anime with enough action and flair to keep fans engaged. It offers incredibly-written characters, a powerful overarching plot, and enough mind games and twists to keep fans guesstimating. Like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, its art style is unique and holds up well. Code Geass follows Lelouch Lamperouge, a boy who finds himself in the middle of a war between the Britannian Empire and its former rulers. Before Lelouch perishes, he encounters a strange female that grants him the Geass. The Geass allows him to command anyone who makes eye contact with him. It’s a supernatural power Lelouch will depend on a lot in the series. It’s also something that will allow him to seek vengeance against the Britannian king who had wronged him in the past. As one can tell, themes of vengeance and guilt fuel Lelouch’s decisions in the series. It’s comparable to Dio Brando’s hatred for the Joestar bloodline in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Lelouch is also a tactical individual that loves to strategize before getting into heated conflict. This aspect of his personality is identical to the fighting style Joseph Joestar uses in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. If you’re a fan of mind games or anime that feature characters fueled by vengeance, watch Code Geass.

Berserk

Similarities – Action & Characters

JoJo Bizarre Adventure’s epic fights and poses left an impact on many viewers. However, it owes a lot to Berserk. With its well-rounded cast, empowering storytelling, and take on dark themes involving vengeance and love, there’s much to decipher in Berserk. Berserk follows Guts, a warrior who joins the Band of Hawks syndicate, after his incredible display of strength in front of its leader Griffith. In time, Guts becomes this syndicate’s commander. As the commander, he aids Griffith in combat by slaughtering every foe that opposes them. While all is well, Guts will find himself in a life-changing scenario that’ll change him for the worse. Comparatively, Berserk and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure feature the ongoing conflict between two male figures. The fights Guts endures in Berserk are harsh, if not, more gruesome compared to what any of the JoJo characters encounter. Likewise, Berserk’s animation feels more retro in comparison and its sequels don’t hold a candle to the incredible visuals and animation shown in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Nevertheless, Berserk’s story will surprise many JoJo fans.
