Instead of meeting with the group, Netflix decided to halt production, so the future of this show is very much unknown, at least at the time of writing anyway....

An atmospheric, bloated thriller Nightmare Alley is a beautifully made, atmospheric noir thriller. It’s also way too long. Now, before an army of filmgoers angrily sharpen their knives, I’d like to preface this review to say I love long films. But this one really does take its sweet ol’ time to get to the good stuff. That laborious ride is helped somewhat by gorgeous set design and excellent acting, and Guillermo Del Toro’s name alone will be enough to entice people into the theaters....

Episode 11 of Normal People begins in August with both Connell and Marianne back in Sligo hanging out together. Their newfound friendship is something both of them struggle with and given the obvious feelings they have for one another, they cave to their own desires and start having sex. Only, it’s different this time. Marianne asks whether Connell will hit her but he refuses, shattering their lustful mood immediately. Marianne’s been so used to sleeping with men that have hit her or used her, the whole notion of love making tenderly is clearly something she struggles with....

A New Recruit After the intriguing opening episode NOS4A2 returns, diving deeper into the mystery around Christmas Land whilst continuing to develop the characters and the plot. While the episode itself doesn’t move things forward that much, it does help flesh out some of the world, with an intriguing ending that’ll certainly keep you hooked for the next episode. We begin with the janitor, Bing, determined to make it to Christmas Land....

Plot Armour The most important part of any TV show is good writing. NOS4A2’s first season wasn’t the best written show of the year but it was solid enough to make for an entertaining and dramatic watch. By comparison, this second season lacks any of the same traits that made that one such a good watch. Vic McQueen is a shadow of the person she once was. By comparison, Manx is now forever young which loses that same sense of urgency he once had....

Simon Says Let’s Get Personal Episode 3 of One of Us is Lying Season 2 starts with Bronwyn and Janae waiting for Nate to finish his shift working at a restaurant. Bronwyn states that they should get rid of Jake’s body from the freezer in her family yacht since Cole’s $100k reward. Janae claims that this was all the more reason for them to not mess with the body and leave it be....

Only, she’s completely disinterested and tells him to go to bed instead. This is a harsh reminder of how he’s craving affection from her and receiving nothing. This is only exacerbated by Choi-Ung’s close relationship with his parents, with Ji-ung observing their closeness....

Chun-Hui and Eun-Gi 1 Episode 16 of Our Blues starts with Chun-hui clearing through her things, burning them out in the fields. Eun-Hui spies her from afar and heads over. It’s not just clothes though, she’s also burning photos too. She even burns her skirt! But Chun-Hui’s nonchalant attitude, followed by blood dribbling out her mouth, makes Eun-Hui realize that the old woman is not doing too well. We also cut across to a new character here, a sweet little girl called Eun-Gi and her father Man-Su....

The Family Episode 6 of Outer Range begins with Royal out driving to the hole. Autumn is there waiting for him; she wants her necklace back. Royal agrees to take her back to the farm… but in reality he actually drives far away from her tent. Autumn starts to lose her nerve and demands he stop. When he fails to do so, she tumbles off the quad and hurts her legs pretty badly....

Higher Ground P-Valley returns this week with another indifferent slice of drama as this Starz Original continues to deliver a formulaic series about strippers. There’s definitely some potential here – in particular characters like Keyshawn – but this character-driven study is sidelined in favour of an uninteresting story about a casino takeover. Episode 3 of P-Valley begins with a man known simply as “Coach” receiving a private lap-dance from Mercedes. He promises her the world but she’s wise to this tactic and walks away....

Burping Trash Hole Episode 7 of Paper Girls starts with Tiffany watching her own graduation video from 1994, even using Spider-Man’s “With great power, comes great responsibility” line too! Well, I guess they have to do something to keep themselves preoccupied, given older Tiffany’s reveal last episode that they’re stuck here for at least 7 years until the next Folding. Of course, that’s 7 years that Mac doesn’t have. Tiffany takes her younger self out for a coffee – and a reality check....

The Myth of the Naiad A sci-fi series dabbling in a variety of different paranormal and supernatural occurrences wouldn’t be complete without talk of plagues. Episode 4 of Paranormal begins after one of Refaat’s lectures, where he heads back to his office but once again sees Shiraz’s ghost outside. Maggie shows up and tells him he’s afraid of expressing his true feelings, allowing Refaat to finally open up – at least a little – and verbalize his internal thoughts....

Physical Season 2 Episode 1 Physical is an interesting dark comedy, set in 1980’s San Diego and following Sheila Rubin as she goes on a journey of self discovery through aerobics. Part of this stems from her husband, who loses his job and decides to run for office. The show is as much a social commentary of what it was like to be a woman in the 80’s as it is a cutting dark comedy, and there are glimmers of series like GLOW in this too....

The End? Does Laura find Nick? Episode 8 of Pieces of Her begins with Laura phoning Nick and asking to meet, determined to try and settle this conflict once and for all. The collateral in all this is Jasper, who Laura decides to sacrifice in order to get her daughter back and end this nightmare. On the road, Laura receives a message from Nick, telling Laura she should take better care of her daughter....
